Bio/Research

His research has dealt generally with the education of ethnic minorities but also with Malay Muslims in Singapore, religious schools in Thailand, Malay village life, Malay dress, Indonesian primary school teachers, and Malay magic. He has also done research on Asian immigrants in the United States. More recently, he has done research on religious expression and legal boundaries in the use of public space. He served as an Education Officer with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Vietnamese Refugee Resettlement Program. He was an ESL teacher in Malaysia with the Peace Corps and also taught ESL at a Teacher’s Training College in Thailand. He served several years as an Associate Dean in International Affairs and Director of Study Abroad at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. In addition, he was a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology and Director of the Undergraduate Programs in International Affairs. He holds a Ph.D. in the field of Educational Anthropology and an M.A. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh. He also holds a M.Ed. in English Language Arts and an A.B. in English from the University of Missouri.
