Bio/Research

Elza Ibroscheva is the Associate Dean at the School of Communications. Prior to that, Ibroscheva was Professor and Chair of the Department of Mass Communications, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communications and Media Arts from Southern Illinois University.

She has been the recipient of numerous research and study grants, including awards from the American Council of Learned Societies, the International Research Exchange, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the University of Oslo, Norway, Central European University, University of Illinois European Union Center, etc. She has published over thirty articles and book charters in journals such as the European Journal of Cultural Studies, Howard Journal of Communication, Central European Journal of Communication, Feminist Media Studies, International Journal of Communication, Sex Roles: Journal of Research, the Russian Journal of Communication. Originally from Bulgaria, her research interests focus on media developments in Eastern Europe, include media stereotypes, international and political communication, gender representations in the media as well as the role of the media in fueling nationalism.

Ibroscheva is the author of Advertising, Sex and Post Socialism: Women, Media and Femininity in the Balkans (Rowman and Littlefield, 2013) and an editor (with Dr. Maria Raicheva-Stover) of the volume Women in Politics and Media: Perspectives from Nations in Transition (Bloomsbury, 2014). In 2015, Ibroscheva was the recipient of the SIUE William and Margaret Going Research Professorship Award, and her research (with Dr. Nadia Kaneva) on female politicians in Eastern Europe was recognized with an honorable mention for best essay by the Heldt Prize of The Association for Women in Slavic Studies.
