Bio/Research
Joe Schuster has been a member of the faculty of Webster University since 1985 and received the 2008 William T. Kemper Award
for Excellence in Teaching. From 1999 to 2013, he served as chair of the department of Communications and Journalism.
He is the author of a novel, The Might Have Been, which earned praise from The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus
Reviews, St. Louis Post Dispatch, and other periodicals. It was a finalist for the 2012 CASEY Award for the Best Baseball Book of
the Year, and made the St. Louis Post Dispatch's "50 Favorite Books of 2012.
He has also published a short nonfiction book about baseball, One Season in the Sun, and roughly 600 articles, essays and reviews in national, regional and local magazines and newspapers, including Sport magazine, USA Today, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis Magazine, Game Day magazine, Mary Engelbreit Home Companion and The Riverfront Times, among others. In 2013, he contributed chapters to several books that are part of the Society of American Baseball Research's ambitious biography project and was one of a handful of writers who assembled a comprehensive chronology of the career of baseball icon Stan Musial for the St. Louis Cardinals' official yearbook. His fiction has appeared in Kenyon Review, Iowa Review, Missouri Review and New Virginia Review, and other journals.
Twice his work was recognized among the "Distinguished Stories" cited in Best American Short Stories. He is married and the very proud father of five children.
