Bio/Research

Dr. Lee-Johnson joined Webster University in 2013. She earned a Ph.D. in Foreign, Second, and Multilingual Language Education from The Ohio State University in 2012. She had received the Flesher Fellowship, the Dorothy D. Scrivener Memorial Scholarship, and the Ray Travel Award before joining Webster. In 2017-18, Dr. Lee-Johnson had been awarded a $2.7 million National Professional Development Grant from the U.S. Department of Education as a Co-Director and she has been working on the research and teaching of the grant to prepare 120 ESL teachers in 5 years.

In 2016-17 academic year, she received the Women of Webster Award from the Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs of Webster University. Dr. Lee-Johnson has received many research grants such as the Kornblum Research Grant and Faculty Research Grant for making a change in other people’s lives.

Her research interests include discourse analysis, multimodality in picture books about immigrants and refugees, TESOL teacher education, non-native English speaking teachers, and out-of-class literacy practices of English language learners. She has published articles in peer-reviewed journals such as TESOL Journal, Quarterly Journal of Chinese Studies, Journal of Ethnographic and Qualitative Research, The Journal of Research and Practice for Adult Literacy, Secondary, and Basic Education, The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, The Reading Matrix, and many others.
